Πριν από μερικές ώρες έμαθα για τον θάνατο του Philip Seymour Hoffman και πραγματικά σοκαρίστηκα-όπως και όλοι φαντάζομαι. Τον Philip Seymour Hoffman τον γνώρισα όταν είδα την ταινία Magnolia. Μια ταινία που αν και αρκετά περίεργη, λάτρεψα. Παρολαυτά άρχισα να τον εκτιμώ σαν ηθοποιό όταν έπαιξε τον πολύ αγαπημένο μου Truman Capote στην ταινία Capote. Από τότε τον λάτρεψα.

“I think Magnolia is one of the best films I've ever seen and I can say that straight and out and anybody that disagrees with me I'll fight you to the death. I just think it is one of the greatest films I've ever been in and ever seen.”

Ο Philip Seymour Hoffman γεννήθηκε το 1967 στο Fairport της Νέας Υόρκης. Το 1984 παρακολούθησε μαθήματα υποκριτικής στο New York State Summer School of the Arts και μετά στο Circle in the Square Theatre με δάσκαλο υποκριτικής τον Alan Langdon. Το 1989 πήρε το Bachelor of Fine Arts απ’ το πανεπιστήμιο της Νέας Υόρκης Tisch School of the Arts.

Το 1991 πήρε τον πρώτο του ρόλο στην τηλεοπτική σειρά Law & Order. Μετά απ’ αυτό έκανε διάφορες εμφανίσεις σε ταινίες με πιο επιτυχημένη αυτήν στο Scent of a woman. Η πρώτη μεγάλη του επιτυχία ήταν το 1997, στο Boogie Nights, όπου ήταν και υποψήφιος για Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture στα βραβεία SAG. Εμφανίστηκε σε αρκετές ακόμα ταινίες μέχρι το 1998 που έπαιξε στο Big Lebowski. To 1999 παίρνει έναν αρκετά ενδιαφέρον ρόλο δίπλα στον Tom Cruise και την Julianne Moore στο Magnolia κερδίζοντας αρκετά βραβεία για supporting actor και ακόμα μια υποψηφιότητα για τα SAG. Από ‘κει και πέρα αρχίζουν οι επιτυχίες για την καριέρα του. Εμφανίσεις στο The talented Mr. Ripley, Almost Famous, Red Dragon, 25th Hour, Cold Mountain, Along came Polly μέχρι που το 2005 φτάνει στο τοπ με την ταινία Capote.

“Sometimes I'm working on a film and someone will ask me if I'm having fun. And I'm tempted to tell them the truth: No, absolutely not. Having no fun here at all. You know what's going to be fun? When it's done, and I've done a fuckin' good job, and I know people are getting something out of that. I'll have a lot of fun then. A ton of it.”

Το 2005, λοιπόν, ο Hoffman παίρνει τον ρόλο του εκκεντρικού Truman Capote και βλέπει την καριέρα του να απογειώνεται. Κερδίζει το ένα βραβείο μετά το άλλο, την πρώτη του χρυσή σφαίρα για Best Actor - Motion Picture Drama και αργότερα το πρώτο του Oscar για Best Leading Actor. Έτσι επικυρώνεται κ απ’ την ακαδημία ότι πρόκειται για ένα σπουδαίο ηθοποιό. Συνεχίζει με ταινίες όπως Mission Impossible III, Before the devil Knows you’re dead, the savages, Charlie Wislon’s war για την οποία κερδίζει και υποψηφιότητα για τις χρυσές σφαίρες και για τα Oscar για Supporting Role, Synecdoche New York, το Doubt που επίσης παίρνει υποψηφιότητα για τα Oscar και τα Golden Globes για Best Supporting Actor,  το animation Mary & Max, το The Invasion of Lying και το Arthur.

“My favorite thing about acting is being alone and going through the scripts and working on it and getting ideas and asking myself questions, looking outside myself for them and researching and getting to the bottom of something and being creative with it as an actor and how to express it in a creative fashion. That's my favorite part. And,the actual acting of it.”

To 2010 o Hoffman κάνει την πρώτη του σκηνοθετική απόπειρα με το Jack goes Boating. To 2011 συνεχίζει τους supporting ρόλους με το Moneyball, το Ides of March και το Master για το οποίο κερδίζει πολλά βραβεία για Best Supporting Actor και παίρνει ακόμα μια υποψηφιότητα για τις χρυσές σφαίρες και τα Oscar. Το 2013 παίρνει μέρος στις ταινίες Hunger Games, που το The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 γυρίζεται τώρα.

“Film is a very uncomfortable medium for an actor. It's just not conducive to doing what actors do. The first few days of shooting are like you just getting over the fact that your there. These people and the camera over the shoulder and the light and the boom - you're just going crazy trying to find some kind of center of relaxation and then you can get into a rhythm and it can be very satisfying. If you do good work and it's on film, that's a very satisfying thing.”

Ο Hoffman εκτός απ’ το κινηματογράφο έκανε και πολλές εμφανίσεις στο θέατρο. Το 2001 σκηνοθέτησε την παράσταση Jesus hopped the “A” train, το 2003 την παράσταση Out Lady of 121st Street, το 2005 το The Last Days of Judas Iscariot, το 2008 το The Little Flower of East Orange και το 2010 το The Long Red Road. Ο Hoffman είχε δηλώσει για τις διαφορές μεταξύ του να παίζεις και να σκηνοθετείς: "the director’s experience is not the real experience...You are the most subjective person in the room. You have no objectivity. You have to take a couple of weeks off and then come back to watch it without telling anyone, and you will see it with different eyes.”

Εξαιρετικά πολυδιάστατος στους ρόλους του με βασικό χαρακτηριστικό το πόσο βαθειά συναισθηματικοί ήταν...απ’ τον εκκεντρικό Truman, στον φιλόδοξο σκηνοθέτη και στον ιερέα Flynn. O Hoffman με όποιον ρόλο κ αν καταπιανόταν γίνονταν ένα. Έβγαζε μια απίστευτη ευαισθησία και μια  λεπτότητα που απαιτούσαν οι ρόλοι του και δεν σου άφηνε καμία αμφιβολία ότι ήταν ο ικανότερος για το εκάστοτε ρόλο.  Αντίθετα κάθε φορά που τον βλέπεις σου βγάζει μια πολύ δυνατή βεβαιότητα ότι είναι αυτός ακριβώς που υποδύεται.

“Actors are responsible to the people we play. I don't label or judge. I just play them as honestly and expressively and creatively as I can, in the hope that people who ordinarily turn their heads in disgust instead think, 'What I thought I'd feel about that guy, I don't totally feel right now.”

Εν κατακλείδι, ήταν ένας εξαιρετικός ηθοποιός που σίγουρα έκανε λίγο καλύτερο το Hollywood. Είχε έναν ιδιαίτερο τρόπο να σε μαγευει και αυτή η μαγεία σίγουρα θα μείνει μαζί με τις ταινίες του στον κινηματογράφο και σίγουρα είχε πολλά ακόμα να δώσει. Αν και στα 22 του πήγε σε κλινική αποτοξίνωσης για ναρκωτικά και αλκοόλ...όπως είχε δηλώσει: “I think I would have drank myself to death, literally, if I didn't just stop, once and for all when I did. I am not ever going to preach to anyone about drugs or drinking. But, for me, when they were around, I had no self control.” και έμεινε νηφάλιος μέχρι και το 2013-όπως επίσης είχε δηλώσει-που εισήχθη πάλι σε κλινική αποτοξίνωσης, πολλοί λένε πως η αιτία θανάτου του είναι drug overdose. Ακόμα κάτι επίσημο δεν έχει κυκλοφορήσει. Προσπαθώ να βρω μια λέξη να κλείσω το κείμενο κ μόνο μια μου έρχεται στο μυαλό. Damn.

“A lot of people describe me as chubby, which seems so easy, so first-choice. Or stocky. Fair-skinned. Tow-headed. There are so many other choices. How about dense? I mean, I'm a thick kind of guy. But I'm never described in attractive ways. I'm waiting for somebody to say I'm at least cute. But nobody has.”
