Βλέποντας Jimmy Fallon, έμαθα τους The Roots. Οι Roots είναι ένα εξαιρετικό συγκρότημα. Το 2014, κυκλοφόρησαν το 11ο studio άλμπουμ τους. Ο Questlove στα drums, ο Black Thought στο rap, ο Kamal Gray στα πλήκτρα, ο F. Knuckles στα κρουστά, ο Captain Kirk Douglas στην κιθάρα, ο Tuba Gooding, Jr. (Damon Bryson) στο sousaphone, ο James Poyser στα πλήκτρα για το “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” και τις live εμφανίσεις και ο Mark Kelley στο μπάσο μας φέρνουν 11 τραγούδια.

Το άλμπουμ ανοίγει με το Theme from the Middle of the Night με την Nina Simone απ’ την ταινία του 1959 και είναι ότι πρέπει για να σε βάλει στο κλίμα. Τα τραγούδια έχουν όλα κάτι να προσέξεις. Απ’ το εξαιρετικό The Devil με την Mary Lou Williams μέχρι και το The Dark (Trinity) με τους Dice Raw & Greg Porn με τον Questlove να δίνει ρέστα με τα snares.

Οι The Roots επιστρέφουν μετά από 3 χρόνια και φτιάχνουν μια εξαιρετική δουλειά. Υπέροχη παραγωγή και ενορχήστρωση. Ήχοι από Hip Hop κυρίως συνδυασμένοι με μια avant-garde κλασσική jazz αλλά και μ’ ένα alternative hip hop του ‘80. Αυτό που παίζει μεγάλο ρόλο σε τραγούδια rap είναι ο στίχος και οι στίχοι τους είναι πραγματικά εξαιρετικοί. Όπως και η φωνή του Black Thought. Πιο ώριμη, λίγο πιο σκοτεινή και πιο τραχύς, όσο περνάνε τα χρόνια γίνεται όλο και καλύτερη αντί το αντίθετο.

Ο Questlove δήλωσε για το άλμπουμ : "The music originally evolved to paint portraits of real people and handle real problems at close range—social contract, anyone?—but these days, hip-hop mainly rearranges symbolic freight on the black star-liner,".

Το άλμπουμ πούλησε πάνω από 35,000 αντίτυπα την πρώτη του κιόλας εβδομάδα κυκλοφορίας. Έφτασε την No 11 θέση στο US Billboard 200 και την No 3 στο US Top R&B/Hip Hop Albums του Billboard.

Εν κατακλείδι, το άλμπουμ έχει έναν πραγματικά εξαιρετικό ήχο. Έτσι κι αλλιώς οι The roots είναι ένα συγκρότημα που μένουν πιστοί στο είδος τους. Σταθεροί, υπεύθυνοι αλλά και κλασσικοί φτιάχνουν εξαιρετική μουσική η οποία δεν συμβιβάζεται ανάλογα με το τι ζητά η εποχή.
